Costly Mistakes
Many homeowners are interested in installing their own irrigation system but are not sure if it is a safe job to do themselves. DIY irrigation installation & repair can be extremely risky, here are some of the potential dangers and how to avoid them.
Miscalculating the amount of water needed
The first and most common mistake during DIY irrigation installation & repair is miscalculating how much water your system will need. Depending on how much water you estimate, it can either be too little or too much. It’s safe to say that there is no such thing as too much water, but how much water your system needs will depend on many factors, such as the number of sprinklers and heads, the soil type, and even other landscaping elements.
Improper fusing
After you have determined how much water your irrigation system will need, you will have to decide on the fusing method to be used. This basically means that by the time you start watering, you will have to decide if the time on the fuse was too short or too long. If it was too short, the water will not have had time to penetrate the dirt, which means too little water will be left in the soil, leading to a dry patch. That’s why it’s always a good idea to have an extra fuse.
The wrong head type
The next thing you have to consider is the type of head you need to buy. There are at least three different types, each with its own pros and cons. A Lawn Rover, or lobe, is a flat-top design with a ball or spike at the end. Lawn rovers perform well in lawns and landscaped areas where you need to prevent weeds and keep the water in the soil. Lawn rammers are designed to act as a mulch or drip system, or as a means of kill-thatch removal. They are best used on lawns that are just too flat to require lawn rangers.
