How to Get the Most Out of Your Lawn Sprinkler System

Tips to Improve Your Sprinkler System

Here, we at Linn's Irrigation LLC have provided a few tips on how to improve the efficiency of your lawn sprinkler system.

Be sure you have all the same irrigation heads

Make sure that the sprinkler heads have been installed close enough to each other so all the areas of the lawn receive sufficient water, without any overlap.

Raise low irrigation heads that have sunk into the soil

This prevents grass from interfering with the water stream, thus improving the sprinkler coverage. Just remember to be careful not to raise the sprinkler heads too much to avoid them being damaged by the lawnmower. And when possible, upgrade old water-damaged heads with new water-saving ones.

Install heads that come with built-in pressure regulating devices

High-pressure heads can be identified by the excessive amount of misting water, this is a common issue with pop-up spray heads.

Replace outdated irrigation controllers

If your current system is damaged or broken, this is the best time to install a more efficient system. Install either rain or moisture sensor to prevent watering after a rainstorm.

Reprogram your controller monthly

Overall, a lawn needs around 1 inch of water each week in the summer, less in the spring and fall months. Water shrubs and flowers more efficiently by using a pre-existing pop-up spray head into a drip irrigation zone. On average, conventional spray zones are only about 50% efficient, whereas drip systems are more than 90%.

Group plants by their requirements

Remember both trees and shrubs require less watering than lawns. You can almost drown shrubs if you water them as much as your lawn. This may require you to add another zone to your sprinkler system.

Re-nozzle to matched precipitation rates

Matched precipitation rate means a uniform delivery of water across each square foot. Each sprinkler’s coverage offers every blade with no more- or no less- water than the one next to it. The result is a high-precision application and a green, healthy lawn.
